The main characteristics are: High compression levels in the new 7z format with LZMA compression – 7-Zip is free software distributed under the GNU LGPL licence – Formats supported: 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, Z, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB.
It achieves between 2 and 10% better compression for ZIP and GZIP formats than PKZip and WinZip
